Infill of A580 Underpass
OVERVIEW
ECK Civil Engineering delivered a complex underpass infill scheme on the A580 at Penny Lane, St Helens - permanently removing a redundant, publicly accessible void beneath an existing highway bridge with a durable, low-maintenance solution.
OUR ROLE
Appointed as main subcontractor, ECK carried out ground clearance and installed a temporary haul road before core drilling 30 piles to avoid loading the bridge footings. The team then built a heavily reinforced concrete raft with service ducts and an integrated HDPE wildlife tunnel, before closing both ends and filling the void with lightweight foamed concrete.
RESULT
The scheme permanently removed the redundant underpass, cutting the Authority's ongoing maintenance liability while protecting the bridge footings and maintaining ecological connectivity through the wildlife tunnel. ECK delivered the full scope safely, to specification, and with minimal disruption.
